I was letting someone listen to amateur radio transmissions and the first noticeable thing for that person was that the transmissions stop when there is nothing to report freeing the frequency for other users. As opposed to broadcast radio where loss of signal is a serious failure and lots of money is paid for an frequency license. For me having listened to other communications via scanner like security dispatch, police, fire departments and others it is quite normal to hear radio transmissions that are short and stop when the person has stopped talking. But for most other people 'radio' is an always-on concept. We joked that not a lot would be left of commercial broadcast radio when they only would transmit when they had useful information to share.

New attempts to get a call out via the unauthenticated SIP context on my asterisk testserver, this time attempts to get connected to +96277xxxxxxx numbers. These are Orange Jordan mobile phone numbers. The originating IPs are also in Jordan so I guess the attacker is waiting for the mobile phone to ring.

And 4 months after previous scam phonecalls they are calling again from 0014259053074 (or +1-425-905-3074 / 425-905-3074). We'll have to wonder what the scam would be this time, there was nobody available to be scammed on the phone...

Reading about 0day Linux/CentOS SSHd Spam Exploit — libkeyutils.so.1.9 I decided to actively monitor for the wrong file(s) using zabbix. Using a template linked to our linux template so all linux servers with a working agent are monitored. Developed on zabbix 1.8.16: zbx_template_detect_libkeyutil.xml: zabbix template to detect libkeyutil.so.1.9 files. As noted, if you find such a file and rpm can't give you the package it is from, you have a serious security incident.

Lots of problems have already been solved by people willing to share the solution. So I wasn't surprised somebody already learned Zabbix to work with HP UPS units.

I found Template gallery - Zabbix forums japan with a template for an HP UPS. It took some translating since "Panne d'alimentation" (literally translated: malnourishment, not enough food. Meaning: low input voltage) is too much thinking for me. But it works now and I have all the data, triggers and graphs I want.

The number of items in the database behind this homepage passed 2000. The item which should be number 2000 is Wardriving results up to today: 2126 new networks with GPS locations - 2013-02-11. Lots of subjects have passed. Notable is the rise in the amount of posts: I have posted more items (and more text) in 2013 already than in the whole of 1999 although I think the newsitems from a file only started in September 1999 which in February 2006 switched to a postgres database.

Scherm Ukash politievirus 1 Scherm Ukash politievirus 2

Normaal is "Follow the money" een goede opsporingsmethode.

Google+Koos van den Hout : Right side hinge broke on my laptop today. The laptop is five years old so this is a hint it may be time for a replacement. I removed the broken hinge part with some effort, at least I can open and close the lid again without needing pliers.
Thank you Dell, for putting the service manuals on-line with clear instructions.

Browsing from one hamradio web log to the other I came across this gem: Humorous Repeater IDs - KB6NU's Ham Radio Blog. Don AE5DW of Amateur Radio Newsline recorded some humourous IDs for repeaters.

Repeaters have to announce themselves on their output frequency on a regular basis (the rules for this can differ per country). Default is an output of the callsign in morse code or synthesized voice, but the above is what you get when you let someone with a good voice and experience in radio making.

Playing with some blue box apps on the Android tablet: Phone Losers Blue Box: simple Blue Box application and Tone dialer FREE: DTMF / Blue box / Red box.

Both are more of a gimmick than really usable, although rumours that MF is still in use in some remote corners of the world are persistent.

Fun to hear those tones from the Android tablet. It does make me wonder: if I play tones like these in a big crowd, will I get seasoned phreaks to look up when I play some MF...

Repeater listing southern part of Limburg the Netherlands Checking Repeater by ZBM2 software for Android in the really southern part of the Netherlands I noticed a lot of the listings are for German (DB prefix) repeaters. Further down the listing came some Belgian (ON prefix) and more Dutch repeaters. The fun of being near the border. Makes me wonder what the rules and practices are for operating a repeater from the other side of the border. Normal politeness in sharing the airwaves would apply, and noting/following what is allowed on both sides of the border.

Work uses an exchange 2010 for mail and calendaring. And with all the faults exchange has with regard to handling Internet e-mail it is an ok calendar solution. But I like Thunderbird as an e-mail client. Thunderbird has a calendar plugin Lightning which gives Thunderbird full calendaring options.

The hard part is accessing exchange calendaring. But, there is a plugin which does just that: Exchange 2007/2010 Calendar and Tasks Provider. It takes a bit of fiddling to configure right (and the exchange server probably has to allow this access via the web interface). And for some reason it sometimes asks for my exchange password again and I have to cancel the first request and answer the second.
