2013-02-27 I was letting someone listen to amateur ...
I was letting someone listen to amateur radio transmissions and the first noticeable thing for that person was that the transmissions stop when there is nothing to report freeing the frequency for other users. As opposed to broadcast radio where loss of signal is a serious failure and lots of money is paid for an frequency license. For me having listened to other communications via scanner like security dispatch, police, fire departments and others it is quite normal to hear radio transmissions that are short and stop when the person has stopped talking. But for most other people 'radio' is an always-on concept. We joked that not a lot would be left of commercial broadcast radio when they only would transmit when they had useful information to share.
