Netflix is eindelijk beschikbaar in Nederland. Gisterenavond eens geprobeerd. Toen ik gisterenavond het apps menu van de smarttv opzocht wilde deze gelijk een update en daarna stond netflix vooraan in het rijtje apps.

We hadden een hoop series in gedachten die we wel on-demand zouden willen kijken. Het hele rijtje (Bones, Ice Road Truckers, Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, The Newsroom, Law and Order) was allemaal niet beschikbaar. Ik hoop dat het aanbod vooruitgaat.

Veel (alles?) wat er staat aan engelstalig materiaal is in het nederlands ondertiteld. Een onduidelijkheid in de interface is dat de score van programma's wordt gegeven op een schaal van 1 tot 5. Normaal voor amerikanen, raar voor nederlanders.

Bladeren/zoeken ging vlotter op een PC met toetsenbord/beeldscherm dus daar hebben we uitgezocht wat ze dan wel hebben. De keuze viel op Frozen Planet.

De standaard kwaliteit viel tegen op een full-hd tv. Dus toen in de voorkeuren gekozen voor de hoogste kwaliteit. Dat zag er stukken beter uit. Tijdens het afspelen zo nu en dan gekeken wat er aan data binnen kwam stromen: 4 tot 6 mbit.

We hebben een nieuwe televisie aangeschaft voor in de woonkamer. De wensen die ik had (voldoende ingangen) bleken in elke 'woonkamer' TV aanwezig te zijn dus dat was geen probleem, maar hielp ook niet bij selecteren. Uiteindelijk is het een Samsung geworden. Die ook 3D aankan en 'Smart Hub' heeft. Er zit gewoon een utp aansluiting aan de TV en dus had de TV ook al snel een IPv4 adres (nee, de TV doet geen IPv6 helaas).

In het 'Smart Hub' menu zitten dan ook 3D demo filmps, die vanaf een streaming service op Internet afgespeeld worden. En daar blijkt dat de ongeveer 8 megabit die we momenteel krijgen (het is wat afgezakt met het recente regenweer) een bottleneck is voor 3D HD content. Sommige films werden regelmatig onderbroken door een 'Loading...' indicator. Nu geeft de 3D demo applicatie bij het starten ook wel aan dat er 'breedband Internet' nodig is, alleen geen enkele indicatie wat precies 'breedband' is.

In het 'Smart Hub' menu zitten ook opties om films on-line te huren via onder andere movie max online. Ik weet niet of die apps zich iets meer aanpassen aan de beschikbare bandbreedte (vraag ook gesteld aan movie max klantenservice). De klantenservice gaf wel aan dat er breedband nodig is en een kabelverbinding met de TV de voorkeur heeft, maar niet de gewenste bandbreedte (misschien had ik de vraag ook niet helemaal duidelijk gesteld).

And from the department of 'some things never change' or 'still going strong', Bratislava STV2 testcard is still available under the title 'Monoskop' on vlc url rtp://@233.10.47.73:1234. This stream must have been going for years, I remember using it in tests years ago.

And during the day when STV2 has no program, it still transmits an actual Philips PM5544 testcard.

Nowadays our growing child likes sesame street a bit more so I record Dutch sesame street from dvb-t. But I noticed those don't always play right on the Netgear EVA 8000HD. Most of the time audio wasn't playing. Audio played fine when viewing them with mplayer on a linux system. So I looked into conversion options and ended up with mencoder. The mencoder commandline I use to convert the program stream from dvbstream to a file playable by the netgear:

Gives a good enough quality and reduces the size of the files to about a third.

Komende dinsdag 1 mei gaan de werkzaamheden aan het mast deel van de zendmast Hoogersmilde beginnen. Ik zou er graag bij zijn maar dat gaat echt niet lukken. Maar ik kan wel mooie reportages volgen: Radio en televisie Nederland heeft mooie foto reportages: Herbouw zendmast Hoogersmilde en de regionale omroep van Drenthe, RTV Drenthe heeft een live streaming webcam herbouw zendmast Smilde. Ik ga zeker meekijken.

Interesting use of an old(-ish) analog tv card: I plugged it into a newish computer to set it up to watch videotape. The chip on the card (Brook Tree Bt848) was recognized but the card itself wasn't recognized right away because the bttv driver really needs more information about the actual card in use. A module parameter needs to be set, a good explanation can be found at bttv page on MythTV wiki. I found the right parameter for the card, and it works. The xawtv application gave lots of errors, but that was mainly because the .app-defaults/Xawtv file (X resources for the application) was so 'old' (1998..) that it disabled all controls. The .xawtv file in my homedir also had old channel assignments from when I lived at a previous address and had cable TV in my 'computer room'.

Anyway, enough history, the card works although the antenna connector is flaky, but the RF output of the video cassette recorder is strong enough to overcome any signal leaks. I can watch some old videotape! Quality is, well, what I expect from a vhs tape and over an RF link. Interesting is that trying to watch video full-screen makes the video have interruptions. An update about the collapsed transmission tower/mast collapse in Hoogersmilde:

The concrete tower part of the transmission tower at Hoogersmilde has been repaired and parts for the new lattice mast that will be on top are coming in to the construction site. Radio-tv-nederland has all the pictures and updates for the rebuilding process of the Hoogersmilde transmitter.

And last night the FM radio transmitters at Lopik were brought back to full power after repairs because of the damage to the transmitter in a small fire on that same 15 July 2011.

As mentioned at Ziggo begint met QAM256 - Digitale Kabeltelevisie (Dutch) my cable provider is switching to QAM256 modulation which allows for 8 bits per symbol, from QAM64 which allows for 6 bits. I noticed it today when checking the information for discovery channel. The signal strength is about 55% but the error rate is 0%, so reception is fine. This should give more services at some point in the future, but my best guess those will cost extra money too.

Update 2012-03-13: It's interesting how Ziggo can do this in production (I call it "in production" when a number of running services is only available in QAM256) with tech news sites only picking this up days later. And still calling it a test. Although they probably don't use the extra bandwidth so they can switch back.

Now we have a child growing up, children's television is also something to look at. The program for young children in the Netherlands is Sesamstraat, the Dutch version of sesame street. But it's scheduled at times that we are still on our way home. The solution: connect the dvb-t stick to the server and record there, to be played on the netgear mediaplayer. I first looked at the linux video disc recorder and MythTv but both are a bit too much everything and the kitchen sink for just regularly recording a tv program to be played somewhere else. There are options for Headless VDR mode but as stated the software is optimized for tunerdevices and playing in one box, like a settop box with harddisk recorder.

I asked a bit around and got a good tip from Matt McLeod: a simple script around dvbstream to fetch the video and audio pid from the dvb stream and save the result. Originally dvbstream is designed to take dvbstreams and put them on a (multicast) network, but it can also save to file. I changed the script to use the right settings for the Dutch programs, and it works and the result plays nicely on the netgear eva mediaplayer. My version:

A 2 minute testrun gave me a 42 megabyte file. If I have it correct, this is a program stream with the video and audio in mpeg-2 format. Which explains why it's quite big for the quality and amount of time recorded. If I want to keep stuff for longer, conversion to better formats will have to be done.

Met de 'verbetering' van het regionale aanbod van Ziggo zijn we L1-TV kwijt.

Voor de grap eens uitgerekend hoe hoog een antenne moet zijn om kans te maken het 'dichtsbijzijnde' dvb-t signaal met L1-TV te ontvangen: 223 meter. De afstand tot de zendmast in Venlo is 110 kilometer (afstand uitgerekend met behulp van Google maps distance calculator), de zender zit op 143 meter boven NAP (volgens Overzicht dvb-t zenders Digitenne - radio-tv-nederland.nl), dus dan is wegens de kromming van de aarde er pas line-of-sight op 223 meter hoogte (uitgerekend met VHF/UHF TV Line of Sight Calculator).

Ik denk dat we er wel komen met de livestream van L1-TV via de website, voor die ene keer in de zoveel tijd dat we het ook echt willen zien.
